While searching the Internet for an apron front farm-style kitchen sink recently, we came across a deal on Craigslist that we couldn’t resist—a soapstone kitchen sink for $100. After e-mailing the seller, we found out the sink had been salvaged from a local renovation project. Needless to say, we made an appointment to see it the next day.
The Alberene Soapstone Company—“America's only source of this remarkable stone”—created this work of art and bills itself as the stone of choice for chemistry lab counter surfaces for over 120 years (because of its chemical resistance and ability to be refinished in place).
We fell in love with the look and the story of the sink. It was taken out of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine during a recent renovation of the osteopathic manipulative medicine and anatomy labs. It’s got some scratches and some dings. But we just call that character.
You can find a full history of the school here.

Gorgeous and at a good price. We looked into apron front sinks when we renovated our kitchen and the new ones were too expensive for us. I can't wait to see yours finished.
ReplyDeleteDon't suppose they had a second one available? We too are hoping have something similar for our new kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI think the cheapest new apron-front kitchen sink we found was around $500. And though it was gorgeous, it wasn't in our budget.
ReplyDeleteDan, yes they did actually have a second sink! In fact, the warehouse we bought it from had about 4 to choose from--all in different sizes. Ours is 18 inches and there was another the same size. (The larger one had a crack in it.) Be aware that the fronts are not free of blemishes. To us, that adds more character, but I can see how it might not be for everyone.

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! I love it and cannot wait to see it in your kitchen!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mols! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. I'll check them out. I've been informed that what I really want, however, is one with a double basin. Maybe two of them side by side might work???
ReplyDeleteLove it! ...and I like the cabinets in the picture. You're right - you want it to have scratches and dings - just completes the whole look. ...especially coming from a health care environment!
ReplyDeleteDan...this guy definitely didn't have any double basin sinks in the warehouse. I'm not sure how two side by side would work...you'd need two drains & extra plumbing I suppose. I'm sure it's been done before though! :)
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed reading through this posting. Many thanks.
